The Mil Dot reticle provides multiple aiming references above and below the central aiming point. These can be used as repeatable hold-over and hold-under references when shooting at distances that differ from the rifle's zero.

This is particularly useful with air rifles because pellet trajectory changes noticeably across typical shooting distances. Once you have tested your rifle and pellet combination at known ranges, different Mil Dot references can be used for different distances.

The exact point of impact will depend on the rifle, pellet, muzzle velocity, scope height and zero distance, so the reticle should always be tested with your own setup.
