THERMAL vs DIGITAL NIGHT VISION – WHICH IS BETTER?
Neither technology is automatically better – they work differently and suit different requirements.
Thermal imaging detects infrared heat energy rather than visible light. A warm animal or object can therefore stand out clearly from its surroundings even in complete darkness. This makes thermal particularly effective for scanning and quickly locating subjects.
Digital night vision uses an imaging sensor to capture visible and near-infrared light. It produces a more conventional-looking picture and can provide a full-colour image during daylight, with infrared illumination assisting the system at night.

DO I NEED A LASER RANGEFINDER?
An integrated laser rangefinder allows distance to a subject to be measured directly through the optic, removing the need to use a separate handheld rangefinder.
This becomes increasingly useful as distances increase or when working across unfamiliar ground. Many current NocPix thermal scopes combine their integrated LRF with ballistic calculation functionality, allowing measured range information to be used by the scope's ballistic system.
Models carrying an R designation commonly incorporate integrated rangefinding, although specifications should always be checked on the individual product page.
If you regularly work at known, relatively short distances, an integrated LRF may be less important. For variable-distance and open-ground use, it is one of the most useful features to consider.
WHAT DO THERMAL SENSOR RESOLUTIONS MEAN?
Thermal sensor resolution describes the number of temperature-sensitive pixels available to create the thermal image. Common NocPix sensor classes include 256, 384, 640 and flagship 1280-resolution detectors.

Does a longer detection range mean a better thermal scope?
