L35R: The entry model, using a 384×288 sensor and 35mm lens with approximately 1,800m detection.

QUEST S50R vs H50R – IS 1280 RESOLUTION WORTH IT?

This is the key comparison in the QUEST range because the S50R and H50R both use a 50mm F1.1 objective lens and both offer approximately 2,600m manufacturer-stated detection range.

The major difference is sensor resolution. The H50R uses a 640×512 detector with 327,680 thermal pixels, while the S50R uses a 1280×1024 detector with 1,310,720 thermal pixels.

That means the S50R contains four times as many thermal pixels.

This also allows the S50R to start at just 2× magnification and provide an enormous 30 × 24m field of view at 100m. The H50R starts at 4× and provides 15 × 12m.

QUEST S50R vs H35R – WHICH IS THE BETTER ALL-ROUNDER?

The H35R is already an excellent wide-view binocular, but the S50R moves into a different performance class.

Sensor resolution increases from 640×512 to 1280×1024, objective lens size increases from 35mm to 50mm and manufacturer-stated detection range increases from approximately 1,800m to 2,600m.

Despite the larger lens, the S50R actually provides a wider field of view: 30 × 24m at 100m compared with 22 × 18m from the H35R. It also starts at only 2× rather than 3×.

Choose H35R if 640×512 resolution gives you everything you need and value matters. Choose S50R if you want both greater distance capability and the widest field of view in the QUEST range.

WHAT DOES 1280×1024 ACTUALLY GIVE ME?

The S50R's 1280×1024 sensor contains 1,310,720 thermal pixels. A 640×512 detector contains 327,680.

This gives the S50R exactly four times the thermal pixel count of the H35R and H50R.

More detector resolution provides finer image detail and leaves considerably more information available when digital magnification is used. It can also make it easier to distinguish separate heat sources and pick out subtle detail against complex backgrounds.

This higher native resolution is one of the main reasons the S50R can combine a large 50mm objective with such a low 2× base magnification and very wide field of view.

WHY IS THE S50R FIELD OF VIEW SO WIDE?

The S50R provides an exceptionally wide 30 × 24m field of view at 100m despite using the same 50mm focal length as the H50R.

The reason is the much larger 1280×1024 detector. It captures a substantially wider section of the image produced by the objective lens than the smaller 640×512 detector in the H50R.

As a result, the S50R can start at just 2× magnification instead of 4×. This is especially valuable when scanning large areas because considerably more of the landscape remains visible at once.

WHY CHOOSE THERMAL BINOCULARS INSTEAD OF A MONOCULAR?

The main advantage of the QUEST format is comfortable two-eye viewing. This can be especially useful when scanning for long periods because the viewing experience feels more natural than continuously relying on one eye.

The S50R also uses dual high-resolution AMOLED displays, giving each eye a clear viewing image while the binocular body provides a stable two-handed grip.

A monocular remains useful where minimum size and weight are priorities. QUEST binoculars make more sense where viewing comfort, stability and prolonged observation matter more.

WHAT DO R+ & EIS DO?

R+ image processing is NocPix's image-processing technology designed to optimise thermal detail, contrast and overall image presentation.

Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) helps reduce visible image movement during handheld observation, producing a steadier thermal image.

On a high-resolution device such as the S50R, image stabilisation can be particularly useful when inspecting fine detail or using increased digital magnification.

INTEGRATED 1,000m LASER RANGEFINDER

The QUEST S50R includes a concealed laser rangefinder with a manufacturer-specified maximum range of up to 1,000 metres.

DUAL-BATTERY SYSTEM & RUNTIME
