The Hawke Frontier Laser Range Finder (LRF) Binoculars combine premium binocular optics with an integrated laser rangefinder, allowing you to observe and measure distance through a single unit. Designed particularly for stalking, hunting and long-range outdoor use, they remove the need to switch between separate binoculars and a handheld rangefinder when assessing a distant target.
Built around Hawke's H7 optical system, the Frontier LRF combines fully multi-coated optics with a specialised prism system and a clear OLED rangefinding display. The integrated laser rangefinder provides a manufacturer-stated measuring range of 10–1,800 metres with ±1 metre accuracy and includes modes for standard distance, horizontal distance, angle, rain, near and hunt applications.
Available in 8x42 and 10x42 configurations, the 8x42 provides the wider field of view for quickly scanning ground and locating subjects, while the 10x42 provides greater magnification for observing detail at longer distances. Both models use a 42mm objective and rugged IPX7 waterproof construction.

8x42 or 10x42 – Which Should I Choose?
| Model | Character | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 8x42 | Wider field of view and easier scanning | Woodland, stalking, locating moving subjects and general use |
| 10x42 | Greater magnification and distant detail | Open country and longer-range observation |
The 8x42 is particularly well suited to users who regularly scan large areas or follow moving subjects. Its lower magnification provides a wider field of view and makes hand movement less noticeable.
The 10x42 provides greater magnification, making distant subjects appear larger and helping reveal additional detail across open ground. As with any 10x binocular, the trade-off is a narrower field of view and slightly greater sensitivity to hand movement.
Laser Rangefinder – How Does It Work?
The integrated laser rangefinder allows a distance measurement to be taken without lowering the binoculars or switching to a separate rangefinding device. The measured information is shown directly within the OLED display.
The Frontier LRF has a manufacturer-stated measurement range of 10 to 1,800 metres with ±1 metre accuracy. Maximum achievable range depends on the size, reflectivity and angle of the target as well as atmospheric and environmental conditions, so the quoted 1,800 metre figure should be regarded as the system's stated maximum rather than a guaranteed range on every target.
Rangefinding Modes Explained
The Frontier LRF provides several measurement modes for different situations:
- Distance / Scan – standard line-of-sight distance measurement and continuous scanning.
- Horizontal Distance – displays the horizontal component of the measured distance.
- Angle – measures the viewing angle to the target.
- Rain – intended to help reduce interference when ranging in wet conditions.
- Hunt – intended for ranging targets where foreground objects such as vegetation may interfere.
- Near – prioritises nearer targets where multiple objects are present.
What Is True Horizontal Distance?
When viewing steeply uphill or downhill, the straight-line distance to a target is greater than the horizontal distance. The Frontier LRF can provide True Horizontal Distance information alongside angle measurement, giving the user additional information when assessing a target across sloping terrain.

Hawke Binocular Comparison
| Range | Main Optical Feature | Rangefinder | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Endurance ED | ED glass | No | Birdwatching and general wildlife observation |
| Frontier ED X | Premium ED optical system | No | Premium conventional binocular use |
| Frontier APO | Flagship APO optical system | No | Maximum conventional optical performance |
| Frontier LRF | H7 optical system with rangefinding prism system | Yes – up to 1,800m stated | Stalking, hunting and observation where distance measurement is required |
The Frontier LRF is fundamentally different from Hawke's conventional binocular ranges. Its main advantage is combining observation and distance measurement in one unit. If integrated ranging is not required, the Frontier ED X or Frontier APO may be more appropriate for customers prioritising conventional optical performance and lower weight.
Frontier LRF vs Separate Binoculars & Rangefinder
The main advantage of an LRF binocular is speed and convenience. Once a subject is located through the binoculars, its distance can be measured without lowering them, finding a separate rangefinder and reacquiring the same target.
The trade-off is additional weight and complexity compared with a conventional binocular. For users who only occasionally measure distance, separate devices may still make sense. For regular stalking and hunting where both observation and ranging are used repeatedly, combining the two functions can make the process considerably more efficient.
