The Nocpix ROVEX Thermal Imaging Monocular takes a very different approach to handheld thermal observation. Instead of using a conventional eyepiece, the ROVEX combines a sensitive 384×288 thermal sensor with a large 5-inch touchscreen display, allowing the thermal image to be viewed naturally at arm's length and easily shared with other people.
Designed primarily as a thermal search assistant for birdwatching, wildlife observation and outdoor exploration, the ROVEX combines a very wide 17.5° × 13.1° field of view with a fast 15mm F0.8 manually focused objective lens. This wide-angle approach makes it particularly effective for quickly scanning woodland, reeds, hedgerows, grass and other visually complex habitats where locating an animal is often harder than observing it once found.
The ROVEX also adds intelligent features specifically aimed at wildlife search, including AI Smart Tracking, Birding Mode, Rain & Fog Mode, R+ Super-Resolution processing and Smart Target Highlighting. At under 290g without the battery, with IP66 protection and a replaceable 21700 battery system, it is designed to remain easy to carry during longer walks and field sessions.

384×288 Sensor & ≤25mK NETD
The ROVEX uses a 384×288 thermal imaging sensor with a 12μm pixel pitch and ≤25mK NETD thermal sensitivity.
The sensor is designed around fast target discovery rather than extreme long-range observation. Its combination of thermal sensitivity and wide field of view makes it particularly effective for revealing birds and other wildlife that may be visually concealed by foliage, reeds, grass or low-light conditions.
The ≤25mK NETD rating helps the sensor distinguish relatively small differences in temperature, improving the visibility of warm-bodied wildlife against cooler natural backgrounds.
15mm F0.8 Lens & Wide Field of View
The ROVEX uses a fast 15mm F0.8 manually focused objective lens. The large F0.8 aperture allows a high level of infrared energy to reach the detector, supporting a clear thermal image despite the device's compact size.
Its 17.5° × 13.1° field of view is one of the ROVEX's biggest advantages. Rather than concentrating on high magnification, the ROVEX allows a large section of woodland, grassland or vegetation to remain visible at once.
That makes it especially effective for search-first applications: scan a wide area with the ROVEX, locate a likely bird or animal, then switch to binoculars, a spotting scope or camera for detailed visual observation.
5-Inch Touchscreen Display
The defining feature of the ROVEX is its large 5-inch 1280×720 LCD touchscreen.
Unlike a conventional thermal monocular, you do not need to keep one eye pressed against an eyepiece. The device can be held naturally in front of you, allowing the surrounding environment to remain visible while you scan.
The open-view display is also particularly useful for shared observation. Another person can see the same thermal image without having to pass the device backwards and forwards and look through an eyepiece.
The touchscreen provides quick access to functions including brightness, colour palettes, imaging modes, smart tracking, recording and stored images.
AI Smart Tracking & Target Highlighting
The ROVEX includes neural-network-based AI Smart Tracking designed to assist with locating potential bird targets in complex thermal scenes.
When the system identifies a likely bird heat signature, it can highlight and track the target on screen. Nocpix Nature uses colour-coded prompts to indicate confidence:
- Red frame – high-probability target above 70%
- Orange frame – potential target between 40% and 70%
This is particularly useful in environments containing multiple warm objects, branches, vegetation and background thermal noise, where manually checking every heat source can slow the search process.
R+ Super-Resolution & Image Processing
Nocpix Nature equips the ROVEX with R+ Super-Resolution image processing to improve the clarity of the thermal image produced by the native 384×288 detector.
The system processes thermal imagery in real time at 50Hz and is designed to improve edge definition, reduce image noise and make heat sources easier to distinguish against complex backgrounds.
Nocpix states that its R+ Super-Resolution processing can enhance the visual output beyond the native detector resolution, helping produce a cleaner and more informative image during wildlife search.
Birding, Standard & Rain/Fog Modes
The ROVEX includes three dedicated imaging modes so the thermal image can be adapted to different outdoor environments.
Standard Mode balances warm and cool detail, background texture, dynamic range and heat sources for general wildlife observation and everyday scanning.
Birding Mode is specifically designed to make small warm-bodied targets easier to locate. It emphasises likely targets while suppressing cooler background information, helping hidden birds stand out in woods, bushes, reeds and grass.
Rain & Fog Mode is intended for high-humidity and poor-weather conditions. It reduces thermal scattering noise caused by rain, fog and moisture to improve visibility when environmental conditions are less favourable.
Detection Distance Explained
Nocpix Nature specifies a detection distance of 90 metres for a 0.2m × 0.2m target at P(n)=99%. This measurement is particularly relevant to the ROVEX because it is designed around locating comparatively small wildlife such as birds rather than detecting human-sized targets at extreme distances.
The practical distance at which wildlife can be detected will vary according to the size and temperature of the animal, vegetation, weather, humidity and surrounding thermal conditions.
The ROVEX should therefore be viewed primarily as a wide-area wildlife search tool rather than a conventional long-range thermal monocular.
Battery System & What's Included
The Nocpix ROVEX uses a replaceable 21700 rechargeable Li-ion battery. Unlike the VISTA range, which is supplied with two proprietary battery packs, the ROVEX uses a conventional cylindrical 21700 battery system.
One 21700 rechargeable Li-ion battery is included with the ROVEX.
| Battery Type | Replaceable 21700 rechargeable Li-ion battery |
| Battery Included | 1 × 21700 rechargeable battery |
| Battery System | Removable and replaceable |
| Stated Runtime | Up to 4 hours at 22°C |
| Charging | USB Type-C, 5V DC / 2A |
| Full Charge Time | Approximately 6 hours |
The battery can be charged while installed in the ROVEX through the USB Type-C connection, or removed and charged using a compatible 21700 battery charger.
Nocpix specifies the compatible battery as an INR21700/50E-type rechargeable cell. The user manual states that replacement batteries should not exceed 22mm × 71mm and must meet the specified electrical requirements.
Because the battery is removable, a compatible charged spare can be carried for longer wildlife observation sessions.
Photo, Video, Wi-Fi & 64GB Storage
The ROVEX includes 64GB of internal storage and supports both thermal photography and video recording.
Images and recordings can be reviewed directly on the large touchscreen, making the ROVEX particularly convenient when you want to check or show a thermal observation while still in the field.
Wireless connectivity is provided through the NocpixRec app. Once connected by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a compatible mobile device can display the ROVEX image in real time, control selected functions and download or share recorded images and video.
Four Thermal Colour Palettes
The ROVEX provides four thermal colour palettes so the image can be adapted to personal preference and different observation conditions:
- White Hot
- Black Hot
- Red Hot
- Pseudocolour
White Hot and Black Hot provide traditional high-contrast thermal views, while Red Hot and Pseudocolour can make warmer areas easier to distinguish quickly during scanning.
Field Durability & Portability
The ROVEX is designed specifically for mobile outdoor observation. It weighs less than 290g without the external battery and measures approximately 135 × 70 × 182mm.
The body uses a metal frame with a rubberised grip, while IP66 protection helps protect the device against dust and water encountered during normal outdoor use.
Nocpix also specifies resistance to drops of up to 1 metre, making the ROVEX better suited to real-world field use across woodland, wetlands, trails and other outdoor environments.
ROVEX vs Conventional Thermal Monoculars
The ROVEX is designed for a different purpose from thermal monoculars such as the NocPix VISTA and LUMI ranges.
A conventional thermal monocular uses an eyepiece and generally places more emphasis on compactness, magnification and longer-range observation. The ROVEX instead prioritises a wide field of view, large open screen and rapid wildlife search.
| ROVEX | Large 5-inch screen, wide-field scanning, AI bird tracking, shared viewing |
| Conventional Monocular | Eyepiece viewing, more compact optical format, generally better suited to focused or longer-range observation |
For birdwatching, the most useful workflow may be to use the ROVEX to find the animal first, then switch to binoculars or a spotting scope for visual identification and detailed observation.
