The Hawke Endurance ED Marine Compass 7x50 Binoculars combine premium marine optics with an integrated illuminated compass and rangefinding reticle, providing observation, bearing information and distance estimation through a single binocular. Designed specifically for boating, sailing and serious marine use, the 7x50 configuration provides a bright image and steady viewing experience on moving water.

Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass, fully multi-coated optics and high-resolution phase-corrected BAK-4 roof prisms provide excellent clarity, contrast and colour control in demanding high-contrast marine environments. The large 50mm objectives combined with 7x magnification produce a generous 7.1mm exit pupil, making this configuration particularly well suited to observation around dawn, dusk and in poor weather.

The integrated illuminated compass allows bearings to be read without lowering the binoculars, while the rangefinding reticle can be used to estimate distance when the size of the observed object is known. IP67 waterproofing, nitrogen-purged fog-proof construction and a floating neck strap complete a binocular designed specifically for dependable use on and around water.

Built-In Illuminated Compass

The integrated compass allows you to read a bearing while continuing to observe through the binoculars. This is particularly useful when identifying the direction of a vessel, navigation mark, landmark or other object without having to switch between separate binoculars and a handheld compass.

The compass can be illuminated to improve visibility in poor light, making it particularly useful around dawn, dusk and in overcast marine conditions.

The compass system is configured for northern hemisphere latitudes, including the UK and Europe.

How Does the Rangefinding Reticle Work?

The rangefinding reticle is different from an electronic laser rangefinder. It does not fire a laser or automatically display the distance to an object.

Instead, the reticle is marked in milliradians (mils). When the approximate size of an observed object is known, its size within the reticle can be used to calculate an estimated distance.

This provides a useful independent method of estimating distance at sea and can act as an additional visual reference alongside onboard navigation equipment.

Why 7x50 for Marine Use?

The 7x50 format has long been associated with marine binoculars because it combines useful magnification with excellent image stability and strong light-gathering capability.

On moving water, higher magnification can make the movement of the boat considerably more noticeable through the binoculars. The moderate 7x magnification provides a steadier view while still giving enough magnification for identifying vessels, navigation marks, coastline and wildlife.

The 50mm objective lenses also provide significantly greater light-gathering capability than smaller compact binoculars, making the format particularly effective when conditions become darker.

Why Is the 7.1mm Exit Pupil Important?

Dividing the 50mm objective diameter by the 7x magnification gives an exit pupil of approximately 7.1mm.

This large exit pupil provides a generous column of light at the eyepiece and is particularly beneficial in lower-light conditions when the pupil of the eye is more dilated. It also makes precise eye positioning less critical, which can be useful when observing from a moving boat.

In bright daylight the advantage is less pronounced, but around dawn, dusk and poor weather the 7x50 format comes into its own.

Why Choose ED Glass?

Extra-Low Dispersion glass helps reduce chromatic aberration and colour fringing around high-contrast subjects.

This is particularly relevant at sea, where dark boats, navigation markers, birds and coastline are frequently viewed against bright skies or highly reflective water. Better control of colour fringing helps maintain cleaner edges, more natural colour and fine detail.

Magnification 7x 7x
Objective 50mm 50mm
ED Glass Yes Yes
Compass No Yes – illuminated
Rangefinding Reticle No Yes
Best For General marine observation Marine observation plus navigation and distance estimation

The optical specification is fundamentally similar, so the main reason to choose the Compass version is its additional marine navigation functionality.

If you simply want a high-quality 7x50 ED marine binocular, the standard model is the more straightforward choice. If you want to read bearings through the binoculars and have access to a rangefinding reticle, choose the Compass version.

IP67 Waterproofing

The Endurance ED Marine Compass is rated to IP67. This provides protection against dust ingress and temporary immersion in water, making it particularly well suited to the wet conditions encountered on boats and around the coast.

The binoculars are also nitrogen purged to help prevent internal condensation and fogging when moving between changing temperatures and weather conditions.
