The Hawke Frontier ED X GEN 2 Binoculars are the next generation of Hawke's premium Frontier ED X range, combining Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass with an upgraded H7 optical system, Lanthanum ocular glass and wide-angle optics. Designed for serious birdwatching, wildlife observation and demanding outdoor use, GEN 2 builds on the proven Frontier ED X platform with improved optical performance and a choice of compact 34mm or full-size 42mm models.

ED objective glass helps control chromatic aberration and colour fringing, while dielectric-coated, phase-corrected prisms and fully multi-coated optics maximise clarity, contrast and light transmission. Lanthanum glass is incorporated into the ocular system across the GEN 2 range to enhance resolution and image quality, while the 42mm models additionally use field-flattening lenses to improve sharpness towards the edges of the field of view.

A lightweight magnesium alloy chassis, premium rubber armour, water-repellent objective lens coatings and nitrogen-purged waterproof construction make the Frontier ED X GEN 2 equally suited to long days in the field and changing weather conditions. Choose the 8x34 or 10x34 when portability is important, or the 8x42 and 10x42 for the greater light-gathering capability and enhanced optical system of the full-size models.

Which Size Should I Choose?
Model Field of View Close Focus Weight Best For
8x34 145m @ 1000m 2m 525g Walking, birdwatching and maximum portability
10x34 117m @ 1000m 2m 525g Portable long-range wildlife observation
8x42 142m @ 1000m 1.5m 790g Premium all-round birdwatching and wildlife use
10x42 122m @ 1000m 1.5m 755g Distant wildlife and open-country observation

The 8x34 is an excellent choice for customers who walk long distances or want premium optics without the weight of a traditional full-size binocular. At 525g, it provides a particularly attractive balance between optical performance and portability.

The 8x42 is the strongest all-round choice when optical performance takes priority over minimum weight. Its 42mm objectives, wide field of view, close 1.5m focus and field-flattening optical system make it particularly well suited to demanding birdwatching and wildlife observation.

Choose one of the 10x models when additional reach and distant detail are more important. The 10x34 keeps the package compact, while the 10x42 combines 10x magnification with the greater light-gathering capability of a full-size 42mm objective.

What's New with GEN 2?

Frontier ED X GEN 2 is more than a cosmetic update to the original Frontier ED X. Hawke has retained the premium H7 platform and ED objective glass while introducing important changes to the optical system.

Lanthanum ocular glass is now used across the GEN 2 range. This specialist optical glass is incorporated into the eyepiece system to help improve resolution, brightness and image quality.

Field-flattening lenses are also incorporated into the 8x42 and 10x42 GEN 2 models. These are designed to reduce distortion towards the outer edges of the image, helping maintain a sharper view across more of the field.

The result is a more advanced Frontier ED X while retaining the ED glass, dielectric prism coatings, magnesium chassis and rugged weatherproof construction that established the original range.

Why Lanthanum Glass?

Lanthanum glass is a specialist optical glass used within the ocular system of the Frontier ED X GEN 2. Its optical properties allow Hawke to refine the eyepiece design and improve image resolution and brightness.

Combined with the ED objective glass and premium prism system, it contributes to the high-resolution, wide-angle viewing experience that distinguishes GEN 2 from the previous Frontier ED X generation.

What Are Field-Flattening Lenses?

The 8x42 and 10x42 Frontier ED X GEN 2 models incorporate field-flattening lenses designed to improve image sharpness towards the outer edges of the field of view.

In a conventional optical system, image quality can gradually soften or distort as you look towards the edge of the image. Field-flattening optics help correct this effect, creating a more consistently sharp image from the centre towards the perimeter.

This is particularly useful when scanning broad landscapes, following moving wildlife or observing groups of birds across a wide field of view.

Please note: field-flattening lenses are a feature of the 42mm GEN 2 models rather than the 34mm versions.

8x or 10x Magnification?

8x magnification provides a wider and steadier viewing experience, making it particularly well suited to birdwatching, woodland observation and following moving subjects. It also makes hand movement less noticeable during extended viewing.

10x magnification provides greater reach and makes distant subjects appear larger, which can be useful for open-country wildlife, coastal observation and identifying detail at longer ranges.

For the broadest all-round use, choose 8x. If distant detail is regularly the priority, choose 10x.

34mm vs 42mm

The 34mm models are designed to provide premium Frontier optical performance in a noticeably lighter and more portable package. Both the 8x34 and 10x34 weigh approximately 525g, making them particularly attractive for walking, travel and long days in the field.

The 42mm models are larger and heavier but provide greater light-gathering capability. They also add GEN 2's field-flattening lenses and have a closer 1.5m minimum focus distance.

Choose 34mm when carrying comfort and portability are priorities. Choose 42mm when you want the fullest optical capability of the Frontier ED X GEN 2 system.

Why Choose ED Glass?

Extra-Low Dispersion glass is designed to control chromatic aberration, which can otherwise appear as coloured fringing around high-contrast subjects.

Reducing this colour fringing helps preserve natural colour reproduction, fine detail and cleaner edges, particularly when viewing dark birds, branches or wildlife against bright skies and other challenging backgrounds.

Combined with the GEN 2 Lanthanum ocular glass and premium prism coatings, the ED objectives form part of a complete optical system designed for demanding observation.

Frontier ED X GEN 2 vs Original ED X
Feature Frontier ED X Frontier ED X GEN 2
ED Objective Glass Yes Yes
H7 Optical Platform Yes Yes
Dielectric Phase-Corrected Prisms Yes Yes
Lanthanum Ocular Glass No Yes
Field-Flattening Optics No Yes – 42mm models
Magnesium Alloy Chassis Yes Yes
GEN 2 Sizes — 8x34, 10x34, 8x42, 10x42

The biggest reasons to choose GEN 2 are the upgraded ocular system and wider-angle optical design. The 42mm models go a step further with field-flattening lenses for improved edge-to-edge image sharpness.

Frontier ED X GEN 2 vs Endurance ED

Both ranges use Extra-Low Dispersion glass, but Frontier ED X GEN 2 sits further up the Hawke range with a more sophisticated optical system and premium construction.

GEN 2 combines its ED objectives with Lanthanum ocular glass, dielectric-coated phase-corrected prisms and a magnesium alloy chassis. The 42mm models additionally incorporate field-flattening lenses.

Endurance ED remains an excellent choice where ED-glass performance and value are the priorities. Frontier ED X GEN 2 is intended for customers looking for greater optical refinement, wider viewing and premium construction.

Frontier ED X GEN 2 vs Frontier APO

Frontier ED X GEN 2 is one of Hawke's premium binocular systems and introduces significant optical upgrades over the previous ED X generation. Frontier APO remains Hawke's specialist apochromatic binocular range.

The ED X GEN 2 is an excellent choice for customers wanting premium ED optics, wide fields of view and advanced features such as Lanthanum ocular glass and, on the 42mm models, field-flattening lenses.

Frontier APO is the alternative for customers specifically seeking Hawke's apochromatic optical system and the highest level of colour correction within the conventional Hawke binocular range.
