The NocPix VISTA S50R Thermal Imaging Monocular with LRF is the flagship model in the VISTA range, built around an ultra-high-resolution 1280×1024 thermal sensor, exceptional ≤15mK thermal sensitivity and a fast 50mm F0.9 germanium objective lens. It is designed for users who want the highest level of thermal detail available in the VISTA family without sacrificing field of view, scanning ability or long-range capability.

The defining feature of the S50R is its 1280×1024, 12μm thermal detector. Compared with the 640×512 sensors used in the VISTA H-series, it contains roughly four times as many thermal pixels. That extra resolution allows the S50R to provide a remarkably wide 17.5° × 14° field of view while retaining excellent image detail and a useful 2× base magnification.

The result is a thermal monocular that works exceptionally well for both wide-area scanning and detailed observation. Add the integrated laser rangefinder, NocPix's high-resolution 2560×2560 AMOLED display, smooth 60Hz refresh rate and removable battery system, and the S50R sits clearly at the top of the VISTA range.

1280×1024 Thermal Sensor & ≤15mK NETD

The VISTA S50R uses an ultra-high-resolution 1280×1024 thermal detector with a 12μm pixel pitch. This is the biggest technical difference between the S50R and the 640×512 VISTA H-series models.

A 1280×1024 detector contains roughly four times the number of thermal pixels found in a 640×512 sensor. That additional image information gives the S50R a major advantage in fine detail, edge definition and the ability to retain useful image quality when viewing smaller or more distant heat sources.

The detector is also rated at ≤15mK NETD. This high thermal sensitivity allows the S50R to distinguish very small differences in temperature, helping preserve detail when environmental conditions reduce natural thermal contrast.

50mm F0.9 Lens & Wide 17.5° Field of View

The S50R combines its 1280×1024 detector with a fast 50mm F0.9 germanium objective lens.

Normally a 50mm thermal lens is associated with a narrower, higher-magnification image. The S50R's much larger sensor changes that relationship dramatically.

Despite using a 50mm objective, the S50R delivers a very wide 17.5° × 14° field of view, equivalent to approximately 31m × 25m at 100 metres.

This gives the S50R excellent scanning ability while still retaining the reach and image detail expected from a premium 50mm thermal monocular.

2–40× Magnification

The NocPix VISTA S50R starts at 2× base magnification and provides digital magnification up to 40×.

The relatively low 2× starting magnification works particularly well with the large 1280×1024 sensor because it keeps the field of view extremely wide while still presenting a highly detailed thermal image.

Unlike lower-resolution sensors, the S50R has considerably more image information available when digital magnification is applied. This helps it retain useful detail as magnification increases, although—as with all digital thermal zoom—image resolution will progressively reduce at higher zoom levels.

Integrated Laser Rangefinder

The VISTA S50R incorporates an integrated laser rangefinder, allowing distance to an observed target or object to be measured directly through the thermal monocular.

This is particularly useful with thermal imaging because judging distance from a thermal image alone can be difficult, especially at night or when observing across large featureless areas.

Having thermal detection, high-resolution observation and laser ranging combined in one handheld device means there is no need to continually switch between the VISTA and a separate rangefinder.

2560×2560 AMOLED Vision+ Display

The VISTA S50R uses NocPix's 2560×2560 AMOLED Vision+ display system. The extremely high display resolution is particularly appropriate for the S50R because it allows more of the detail generated by the 1280×1024 detector to be presented to the user.

The VISTA series uses a distinctive circular display and large 8mm exit pupil arrangement designed to provide a more immersive and natural viewing experience.

AMOLED technology delivers strong contrast and deep blacks, while the 60Hz thermal refresh rate keeps the image smooth when scanning quickly or following moving animals.

Battery System & What's Included

The NocPix VISTA S50R uses the removable NocPix IBP-7 rechargeable Li-ion battery system. Each IBP-7 battery has a capacity of 4400mAh.

Two NocPix IBP-7 rechargeable battery packs are included with the VISTA S50R. This means you receive the battery required to operate the monocular plus a second interchangeable battery for extended observation sessions rather than needing to purchase a spare separately.

Battery Type NocPix IBP-7 rechargeable Li-ion battery pack
Battery Capacity 4400mAh per battery
Batteries Included 2 × IBP-7 rechargeable batteries
Battery System Removable and interchangeable

The removable battery arrangement is particularly useful on a high-performance thermal such as the S50R. When one battery is depleted, it can be removed and replaced with the second supplied IBP-7 instead of having to stop using the monocular while a fixed internal battery recharges.

Actual operating time will vary according to ambient temperature and the features being used, including Wi-Fi, recording and other electronic functions.

Recording & 64GB Internal Storage

The VISTA S50R incorporates 64GB of built-in storage for capturing thermal photographs and video directly through the monocular without requiring a separate memory card.

The VISTA platform also supports audio recording through its microphone, allowing compatible videos to include spoken commentary or environmental sound.

S50R vs H50R

The S50R and H50R both use a 50mm F0.9 objective lens and both include an integrated laser rangefinder, but their sensors produce very different viewing characteristics.

VISTA S50R 1280×1024 | 50mm F0.9 | 2–40× | 17.5° × 14° FOV
VISTA H50R 640×512 | 50mm F0.9 | 4–40× | 8.8° × 7° FOV

The S50R's detector has roughly four times as many thermal pixels as the H50R. This allows it to deliver approximately twice the field of view in each dimension while retaining excellent image detail.

The H50R starts at 4× magnification and has a narrower long-range viewing character. The S50R starts at 2× and shows a much larger area at once, making it significantly more versatile for scanning while its 1280-resolution detector preserves exceptional detail.

If budget permits and maximum image quality is the priority, the S50R represents a substantial step above the H50R rather than simply a minor specification upgrade.

S50R vs H35R

The H35R is the wide-field option within the 640×512 VISTA H-series, while the S50R achieves an even wider field of view despite using a longer 50mm objective.

VISTA H35R 640×512 | 35mm F0.9 | 3–28× | 12.5° × 10° FOV
VISTA S50R 1280×1024 | 50mm F0.9 | 2–40× | 17.5° × 14° FOV

The H35R remains an excellent option where value and wide-field scanning are important. The S50R goes significantly further, combining an even wider field of view with substantially higher thermal resolution and a 50mm objective.

Why Choose the S50R?

The S50R is the VISTA to choose when thermal image quality is the main priority.

Choose the S50R if you want:

  • The highest-resolution sensor in the VISTA range
  • Maximum fine thermal detail
  • A very wide field of view without dropping to a shorter objective lens
  • Strong scanning performance and long-range capability in the same device
  • An integrated laser rangefinder
  • A premium 2560×2560 AMOLED viewing system
  • Greater image information available when digital magnification is used

The H-series models offer excellent performance for less money, but the S50R is designed for the customer who wants the flagship VISTA experience rather than simply the best value point.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the NocPix VISTA S50R different from the H50R?

The biggest difference is the thermal detector. The S50R uses a 1280×1024 sensor compared with the H50R's 640×512 detector, giving the S50R roughly four times as many thermal pixels and allowing it to produce a much wider field of view while retaining excellent detail.

Does the VISTA S50R have a laser rangefinder?

Yes. The S50R incorporates an integrated laser rangefinder, allowing distance to be measured directly through the monocular.

What is the field of view of the S50R?

The S50R has a 17.5° × 14° field of view, equivalent to approximately 31m × 25m at 100 metres. This is substantially wider than the 50mm H50R despite both models using a 50mm objective lens.

Why does the S50R start at only 2× magnification?

The large 1280×1024 detector allows the S50R to maintain a very wide field of view with a 50mm lens. The 2× starting magnification makes scanning easier, while the high sensor resolution provides far more image information for digital magnification when additional detail is required.

How many batteries come with the VISTA S50R?

The S50R is supplied with 2 × NocPix IBP-7 rechargeable 4400mAh Li-ion battery packs.

Are the batteries removable?
