The NocPix RICO2 L42R Thermal Imaging Scope with LRF is the most accessible model in the RICO2 thermal riflescope range, combining a 384×288, 12μm thermal sensor with a 42mm F1.0 objective lens, integrated laser rangefinder and ballistic calculation. It is designed for customers who want the RICO2 platform and its long-range feature set without moving immediately to the higher-resolution H50R, H75R or flagship S75R.

With ≤18mK thermal sensitivity, 4–16× magnification and a smooth 60Hz refresh rate, the L42R offers a strong balance of price, image quality and longer-distance capability. A dedicated dual-throw Picatinny scope mount is included, so no conventional 30mm scope rings are required when fitting it to a compatible Picatinny rail. Rifles with an 11mm dovetail rail require a suitable dovetail-to-Picatinny adaptor.

IS THE RICO2 L42R RIGHT FOR ME?

The L42R is the best entry point into the RICO2 family if you want the platform's integrated LRF, ballistic calculation, 60Hz imaging and dedicated Picatinny mounting while keeping the purchase price below the higher-resolution models.

Its 384×288 sensor and 42mm lens make it the most accessible RICO2, but the main compromise compared with the H50R is sensor resolution. The H50R steps up significantly to 640×512 and also provides a wider field of view.

Choose the L42R if value is the main priority. Choose the H50R if you can justify the extra cost for substantially more thermal image information and stronger all-round performance.

L42R: The most accessible RICO2, with a 384×288 sensor and 42mm lens.

L42R vs H50R – WHAT DO I GAIN?

The H50R is the most important upgrade to consider from the L42R. Sensor resolution increases from 384×288 to 640×512, while thermal sensitivity improves from ≤18mK to ≤15mK.

The H50R also uses a larger 50mm objective lens but starts at a lower 3× magnification rather than 4×. As a result, its field of view increases from 11 × 8.2m to 15.4 × 11.5m at 100m.

Manufacturer-stated detection range also increases from approximately 2,200m to 2,600m.

Choose L42R to keep cost down. Choose H50R if better resolution, improved thermal sensitivity and a wider field of view are worth the step up.

L42R vs H75R – WHICH IS BETTER FOR LONGER DISTANCES?

The H75R is much more heavily focused on longer-distance thermal observation.

It increases sensor resolution from 384×288 to 640×512, improves NETD from ≤18mK to ≤15mK and increases the objective lens from 42mm to 75mm.

Both start at 4× magnification, but the H75R extends to 32× rather than 16× and has far greater long-range emphasis.

Choose L42R if you want a more affordable and less specialised RICO2. Choose H75R if longer-distance detail and a large 75mm objective are the priorities.

L42R vs S75R – HOW BIG IS THE STEP UP?

The L42R and S75R sit at opposite ends of the RICO2 family.

The L42R uses a 384×288 sensor and 42mm F1.0 lens, while the S75R uses a flagship 1280×1024 sensor and 75mm F1.0 lens.

The S75R therefore captures vastly more thermal image information and combines it with a much larger objective. It also provides a surprisingly wide 20.5 × 16.4m field of view at 100m despite its 75mm lens.

Choose L42R if value is the priority. Choose S75R if maximum image quality and flagship thermal performance justify the considerably higher investment.

384×288 SENSOR – WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

The L42R uses a 384×288, 12μm thermal detector. This is the lowest-resolution detector in the RICO2 family and is one of the reasons the L42R sits at the most accessible price point.

It still provides a useful thermal image, but the 640×512 H50R and H75R will provide significantly more thermal image information and retain more useful detail as magnification increases.

The flagship S75R moves further again to 1280×1024 resolution.

WHAT DOES ≤18mK NETD MEAN?

NETD measures how effectively a thermal detector can distinguish very small differences in temperature. In general, a lower NETD figure indicates greater thermal sensitivity.

The RICO2 L42R is rated at ≤18mK. This helps it retain useful thermal contrast when the temperature difference between a subject and its surroundings is relatively small.

The higher-specification H50R, H75R and S75R are rated at ≤15mK.

42mm F1.0 LENS & FIELD OF VIEW

The L42R uses a 42mm F1.0 objective lens with 4× base magnification.

This provides a field of view of approximately 11 × 8.2 metres at 100 metres. It sits between the wider-view H50R and the more specialised 75mm H75R in terms of viewing characteristics.

The F1.0 aperture also helps maximise the amount of thermal energy reaching the detector.

STEPPLESS ZOOM LEVER – WHAT DOES IT DO?

The RICO2 platform includes a stepless zoom lever, allowing magnification to be adjusted progressively rather than relying only on fixed zoom steps.

The RICO2 L42R includes an integrated laser rangefinder with a manufacturer-stated ranging capability of up to 1,200 metres.

It also includes built-in ballistic calculation functionality, so range information and compatible ballistic data can be handled within the same optic.

This means the L42R retains the key RICO2 ranging and ballistic features despite being the entry model in the family.

DETECTION RANGE vs IDENTIFICATION RANGE

The RICO2 L42R has a manufacturer-stated detection range of approximately 2,200 metres under specified conditions.

Detection range is not the same as identification range. A thermal optic may detect that a heat source is present at considerable distance before enough image detail is available to determine exactly what that heat source is.

Actual useful detail depends on target size, temperature contrast, weather, atmospheric conditions and magnification.

MOUNT & RAIL INFORMATION

A dedicated dual-throw Picatinny scope mount is included with the NocPix RICO2 L42R. The scope does not use a conventional 30mm tube or separate scope rings.

If your rifle has a Picatinny rail: the supplied RICO2 mount is designed to attach to a compatible Picatinny rail, so no additional scope rings are required.

If your rifle has an 11mm dovetail rail: the supplied Picatinny mount will not attach directly. You will need a suitable 11mm dovetail-to-Picatinny adaptor fitted to the rifle first, after which the supplied RICO2 mount can be attached.

Do not select a 30mm Hawke match mount for this scope. The RICO2 L42R uses its own dedicated supplied mounting system.

BATTERY & RUNTIME

The NocPix RICO2 L42R uses a removable rechargeable battery system, allowing the battery to be changed in the field rather than having to stop and recharge the scope itself.

Additional charged spare batteries can be carried and swapped when required, making the L42R practical for longer sessions. Actual runtime will vary depending on temperature and the use of power-intensive features such as video recording, Wi-Fi, the laser rangefinder and ballistic calculation.
