The NocPix RICO 2 H50R Thermal Imaging Scope with LRF is the versatile 640-resolution model in the RICO 2 thermal riflescope range. Combining a high-resolution 640×512, 12μm thermal detector with ≤15mK sensitivity, a fast 60Hz refresh rate and a 50mm F1.0 germanium objective lens, it is designed to deliver detailed thermal imagery without the narrower field of view of the long-range H75R.
With 3–24× magnification and a wide 8.8° × 6.6° field of view – equivalent to 15.4 × 11.5 metres at 100 metres – the H50R is particularly well suited to mixed ground. It provides enough base magnification and lens size for longer-distance observation while retaining a considerably wider view than the 75mm H75R, making it easier to scan ground, locate heat sources and follow moving animals.
The H50R is much more than a high-resolution thermal sensor. RICO 2 combines an integrated laser rangefinder capable of measuring out to 1,200 metres, onboard ballistic calculation, a stepless zoom lever and NocPix's advanced image processing in a purpose-built thermal riflescope. For customers deciding between the RICO 2 models, the H50R is the natural all-round 640 option: more resolution and image detail than the L42R, but wider and more versatile than the long-range H75R.

640×512 Thermal Sensor & ≤15mK NETD
The H50R uses a 640×512 thermal detector with a fine 12μm pixel pitch. A 640-resolution sensor captures substantially more native thermal information than a 384×288 detector, allowing finer target shape and environmental detail to be reproduced.
This becomes particularly valuable when digital magnification is increased. Digital zoom inevitably reduces the amount of native sensor information being displayed, so beginning with a 640×512 image gives the H50R considerably more information to work with.
Thermal sensitivity is rated at ≤15mK NETD. NETD measures the detector's ability to distinguish very small temperature differences; the lower the figure, the more sensitive the thermal system.
High thermal sensitivity is especially useful when environmental conditions produce relatively little temperature contrast – for example during damp, mild, misty or overcast weather – because subtle differences between an animal and its surroundings can be easier to resolve.
50mm F1.0 Lens & Field of View
The RICO 2 H50R is fitted with a 50mm F1.0 germanium objective lens. The combination of a relatively large 50mm focal length and fast F1.0 aperture gives the H50R a strong balance of image scale, thermal transmission and field of view.
Its angular field of view is 8.8° × 6.6°, translating to approximately 15.4 × 11.5 metres at 100 metres.
This is one of the key reasons to choose the H50R instead of automatically moving to the 75mm H75R. The H75R provides greater native image scale for more specialised long-range use, whereas the H50R allows substantially more ground to remain visible through the scope.
Best suited to: mixed farmland, larger fields, foxing, pest control and customers who want strong longer-distance capability without sacrificing too much field of view.
3–24× Magnification & Stepless Zoom
The H50R provides a 3× base magnification with digital magnification extending the overall range to 24×.
Its 3× starting magnification is an important part of the H50R's all-round character. It gives useful image scale for field shooting while remaining low enough to provide a practical view of the surrounding ground.
RICO 2 also incorporates a dedicated stepless zoom lever. Rather than relying solely on fixed magnification steps, the lever allows magnification to be adjusted smoothly and rapidly while maintaining a shooting position.
This makes it possible to stay at lower magnification while searching or tracking, then smoothly increase magnification when additional target detail is required.
Integrated 1,200m Laser Rangefinder
The RICO 2 H50R incorporates its laser rangefinder directly into the riflescope body. NocPix specifies a maximum ranging distance of up to 1,200 metres.
The integrated design keeps the rangefinder aligned with the optical axis and avoids the need for a separate external rangefinding module.
Accurate ranging becomes particularly valuable after dark because many of the normal visual references used to estimate distance are absent through a thermal image.
Thermal detection range and LRF range are not the same measurement. Thermal detection describes the thermal system's ability to detect a specified heat source, while the 1,200m LRF specification describes the maximum laser-ranging capability. Detection does not mean positive target identification at that distance.
Ballistic Calculation
The H50R combines its integrated LRF with onboard ballistic calculation. Once the appropriate ballistic profile and shooting parameters have been configured, measured range can be incorporated into the scope's calculated aiming solution.
This creates a more integrated workflow than using a thermal scope and separate handheld rangefinder, particularly when working across ground where target distance changes frequently.
Ballistic calculation is an aiming aid and does not replace correct zeroing, accurate ammunition data or responsible confirmation of the target and safe backstop.
RICO 2 Viewing Experience
RICO 2 was developed not only around sensor performance but around the experience of viewing through the scope for extended periods.
NocPix combines its thermal detector with an advanced eyepiece design intended to provide a clear, immersive image with reduced visual distortion. This is particularly useful during longer observation sessions when the scope may be used repeatedly for searching, identification and ranging.
The 60Hz refresh rate also keeps movement fluid when following animals or panning across ground, avoiding the less natural movement associated with slower thermal systems.
H50R vs L42R
| Model | H50R / L42R |
| Sensor | 640×512 / 384×288 |
| Pixel Pitch | 12μm / 12μm |
| NETD | ≤15mK / ≤18mK |
| Frame Rate | 60Hz / 60Hz |
| Lens | 50mm F1.0 / 42mm F1.0 |
| Magnification | 3–24× / 4–16× |
| FOV @100m | 15.4 × 11.5m / 11 × 8.2m |
The H50R is a substantial step up from the L42R. Its 640×512 detector contains almost three times as many thermal pixels as the L42R's 384×288 sensor, while sensitivity improves from ≤18mK to ≤15mK.
Interestingly, despite using the larger 50mm objective, the H50R actually provides a wider field of view because of its larger sensor. It also starts at a lower 3× magnification compared with 4× on the L42R.
Choose L42R: if keeping the purchase price down is more important than having 640-resolution image quality.
Choose H50R: if you want the more versatile, higher-detail RICO 2 for mixed-distance use.
H50R vs H75R
The H50R and H75R use the same fundamental 640×512, 12μm, ≤15mK, 60Hz thermal sensor specification. The major difference is the optical system.
| Model | H50R / H75R |
| Sensor | 640×512 / 640×512 |
| NETD | ≤15mK / ≤15mK |
| Lens | 50mm F1.0 / 75mm F1.0 |
| Magnification | 3–24× / 4–32× |
| Angular FOV | 8.8° × 6.6° / 5.9° × 4.7° |
| FOV @100m | 15.4 × 11.5m / 10.2 × 8.2m |
The 75mm lens gives the H75R greater native image scale and makes it the more specialised long-range option. The trade-off is a substantially narrower field of view.
The H50R is therefore likely to be the better choice for many users. Its 50mm lens, 3× base magnification and wider field of view make searching, tracking and working across mixed ground easier while retaining exactly the same 640×512 sensor resolution and ≤15mK thermal sensitivity.
H50R: the 640-resolution all-rounder.
H75R: the more specialised long-range 640 model.
H50R vs S75R Flagship
The S75R sits above the H50R as the flagship RICO 2 model and makes the major jump from a 640×512 detector to a 1280×1024 second-generation thermal sensor.
| Model | H50R / S75R |
| Sensor | 640×512 / 1280×1024 |
| Pixel Pitch | 12μm / 12μm |
| NETD | ≤15mK / ≤15mK |
| Frame Rate | 60Hz / 60Hz |
| Lens | 50mm F1.0 / 75mm F1.0 |
| Magnification | 3–24× / 3–30× |
| FOV @100m | 15.4 × 11.5m / 20.5 × 16.4m |
The S75R's enormous 1280×1024 sensor means it can combine a long 75mm lens with a field of view that is actually wider than the H50R. It also provides four times the native thermal pixel count of a 640×512 detector.
The S75R is therefore the no-compromise option where maximum thermal image information is the priority. The H50R remains considerably more attainable and still delivers excellent 640-resolution performance.
Who Should Choose the H50R?
The H50R makes the most sense for customers who want premium 640-resolution thermal performance but do not specifically need the extra native magnification of the 75mm H75R.
Its combination of 3× base magnification and 15.4m horizontal field of view at 100m makes it particularly versatile across changing distances.
- Mixed farmland and varied ground
- Medium-to-long-range thermal observation
- Customers upgrading from a 384-resolution thermal scope
- Users who value field of view as well as image detail
- Those wanting integrated LRF and ballistic calculation
- Customers who find a 75mm thermal scope too specialised

Mounting the RICO 2 H50R
The RICO 2 is a dedicated thermal riflescope and uses a purpose-designed mounting interface rather than the conventional round 30mm tube used by ranges such as BOLT and ACE.
The exact mounting arrangement required depends on the rifle and rail system being used. Always make sure the chosen mount is appropriate for the rifle, provides adequate eye position and is correctly secured before zeroing.
If you are unsure which mounting solution is required for your rifle, contact Bamfords Online before ordering and we can advise on compatibility.
Battery & Power
The RICO 2 platform is designed for extended field use with a rechargeable power system and the ability to manage power during longer sessions.
Battery endurance is affected by ambient temperature and the use of power-intensive functions such as Wi-Fi, video recording and frequent laser ranging. Cold conditions can reduce the runtime available from any lithium-ion battery.
For longer outings, charge the supplied battery system fully before use and carry suitable charged spare power where appropriate.
Recording & Connectivity
RICO 2 incorporates digital functions that allow thermal footage and images to be captured in the field, making it possible to review observations or retain footage from a session.
Wireless connectivity also allows compatible smart-device functionality through the NocPix ecosystem.
Recording and wireless functions consume additional power, so actual battery runtime can be lower when these features are used continuously.
